Good birding practices in a COVID-19 world.

Being able to bird in a COVID-19 world, either in your own home garden, a nature area, or here on Bonaire, requires that we all adjust our habits.  Here are some general considerations to keep in mind when birding:

1)  Don’t share your optics, including your binoculars, scope, or camera.  Be sure to sanitize or disinfect the eye caps after each birding excursion.

2)  Maintain social distancing of at least 1.5 meters between yourself and others in your group.

3)  Avoid touching surfaces that others may touch, including railings, doorknobs, handles, or other areas in public sites.  If you must touch them, wash your hands, or use hand sanitizer immediately.

Hand Sanitizer:

You will be greeted by Susan along with a spritz of hand sanitizer.  All tour participants must sanitize their hands prior to beginning the tour.

Driving:

While driving, the proper social distancing of 1.5 meters cannot be maintained, and, therefore, everyone must wear masks.  Please be sure to bring your personal mask with you for the tour.

Hiking:

When hiking or otherwise outside of the vehicle, proper social distancing must be maintained.  As long as this is maintained, participants do not need to wear masks in the open air, but it is still highly recommended.

Use of Scopes and Binoculars:

Tour participants are encouraged to bring their own personal sighting device(s).  Binoculars are available here on Bonaire for those who are not able to bring their own, and all sighting devices are sanitized prior to tours.  When using sighting devices that are not personally owned, the use of masks is necessary.
