Lunch Lesson: Crested Caracara Chick Learns by Watching.

Crested Caracaras (Caracara plancus) are known for their opportunistic feeding habits, and this scene perfectly captures that. I spotted this adult diligently digging for worms when its hungry chick came running up, eager for a meal. Listen closely – you can hear the chick's high-pitched begging call! The attentive parent responds, offering up one worm for itself and another for its growing offspring.

But the learning doesn't stop there! Watch until the end – the curious chick is a fast learner. After observing its parent's successful worm-hunting technique, it attempts to mimic the digging behavior. However, it seems the fine line between a tasty morsel and something less appealing hasn't quite been mastered yet. Keep practicing, little one – you'll get there!

Unveiling the Hooded Warbler's Winter Segregation

The Hooded Warbler (Setophaga citrina) holds a special place in ornithological history. It's the first bird species where researchers observed a fascinating phenomenon – gender-based segregation on wintering grounds. This means males and females choose entirely different habitats to spend the colder months! While this behavior is now known in other warbler species, the Hooded Warbler remains a prime example.

These territorial songbirds fiercely defend their feeding grounds, but here's the twist: males favor mature forests, while females opt for shrubby and flooded areas. This habitat separation within the same species is truly remarkable.

Adding another layer of intrigue, eBird data suggests Hooded Warblers might take slightly different migratory paths across the Gulf of Mexico. During their southward fall journey after breeding, they appear to prefer a more easterly route. However, on their northward, spring pre-breeding migration, they seem to favor a more westerly route, making the sighting of this female on Bonaire a very welcome observation!
