It's time for Global Big Day 2024!

Get ready for an exhilarating birding event coming up this Saturday—the highly anticipated Global Big Day 2024! Once again, I am thrilled to be a part of Team Flying Pintails, led by the esteemed BirdsCaribbean Executive Director, Lisa Sorenson. Wherever you are in the world, I invite you to join me in this fantastic bird-counting endeavor. Global Big Day 2024 serves as a fundraiser for BirdsCaribbean to help cover conference costs for Caribbean wildlife students and professionals to attend the upcoming BirdsCaribbean 24th International Conference, 18-22 July 2024. Attending the conference allows participants to build upon or gain new skills to address threats to bird conservation on their respective islands. It’s also an invaluable opportunity to network with the wider conservation community, share their work, and learn from others. For Caribbean students and early-career professionals, this experience will help to kickstart their introduction into the ornithological and conservation community and they will benefit from mentorship opportunities.

I invite you to be a part of Team Flying Pintails, an exceptional group assembled by Lisa to take on other teams in a friendly, yet competitive, birding event. Our mission is to surpass our rivals while supporting the invaluable conservation efforts of BirdsCaribbean, aiming to raise funds to continue their outstanding work. As of now, Team Flying Pintails is making remarkable progress, being almost half of the way to our target. However, we need your assistance to reach our goal, and we warmly welcome you to join us in this exciting endeavor.

There are two ways you can contribute to Global Big Day 2024:

1) Donate to BirdsCaribbean through Team Flying Pintails.
If you are unable to partake in the competition this year, you can still make a meaningful impact by supporting Caribbean birds through a contribution. Lunch Lesson: Crested Caracara Chick Learns by Watching.

Crested Caracaras (Caracara plancus) are known for their opportunistic feeding habits, and this scene perfectly captures that. I spotted this adult diligently digging for worms when its hungry chick came running up, eager for a meal. Listen closely – you can hear the chick's high-pitched begging call! The attentive parent responds, offering up one worm for itself and another for its growing offspring.

But the learning doesn't stop there! Watch until the end – the curious chick is a fast learner. After observing its parent's successful worm-hunting technique, it attempts to mimic the digging behavior. However, it seems the fine line between a tasty morsel and something less appealing hasn't quite been mastered yet. Keep practicing, little one – you'll get there!
